The Silhouettes
Adversaries of the Prophets · Returned After 500 Years
They were the enemy the Prophets had faced. Generations of Knights trained against their remembered threat. None of the modern Knights had ever encountered one.
An Enemy from Before the Trinity Wars
For more than five hundred years, the Silhouettes belonged to scripture, inherited warnings, and the disciplines Sanctum refused to forget. They were the enemy the Prophets had faced during the Aurillium Wars, before the devastation of the Trinity Wars reshaped humanity's world. Generations of Knights trained against their remembered threat. None of the modern Knights had ever encountered one.
Then the storm came.
The Silhouettes return with the lightning, descending from the sky into a city that has preserved their history without understanding the full nature of what it remembers.
They were the enemy the Prophets had faced. Generations of Knights trained against their remembered threat.
A Terrible Significance
Beyond the Great Ring, Sanctum's patrols confront many dangerous creatures. Knights commonly call those threats "demons." The Silhouettes are a distinct, ancient enemy whose disappearance reaches back centuries before those patrols.
Their return carries a terrible significance for Sanctum. The Knights have built their lives around the Prophets' example and the promise of standing beside them when they return. Now an enemy from that sacred past has appeared within reach of the people they have sworn to protect.
Living Black Metal
Silhouettes have the appearance of living black metal: overlapping blades, hooked limbs, and predatory forms whose movement makes it difficult to distinguish armor from anatomy. Lean hunters and heavier, brutal shapes share the same unsettling impression of material continually arranging itself for violence.
Their bodies can regenerate after injuries that should end a fight. Severing a limb may interrupt an attack without stopping the creature.
They can also fuse with one another, joining their bodies into larger weapons and structures. A Knight facing several Silhouettes must contend with the possibility that the shapes before them will become something else entirely.
Their coordination makes that adaptability more dangerous. They act with purpose, exploit openings in armor, and bring their changing bodies to bear against the defenses that keep their opponents alive.
Blackfire
Wounding a Silhouette creates another hazard.
Their blood, known as blackfire, carries dark molten material and plasma. Contact can corrupt Forge-made Aurillium, drain a Knight's reserves, and immobilize armor. The same contamination can threaten the workings of an airship.
For warriors whose protection depends upon intricate Aurillium systems, even a successful strike can carry a cost. The danger continues after the blade has landed.
Tactical Warning
Contact with blackfire can corrupt Forge-made Aurillium, drain a Knight's reserves, and immobilize armor.
What Humanity Does Not Know
Humanity has preserved accounts of the Silhouettes' violence. Their deeper nature, the truth behind their long absence, and the reasons for their return remain among the world's most dangerous mysteries.
For Sanctum, their arrival makes the oldest oaths immediate. An enemy remembered through centuries of prayer and training has become a living threat — and behind the Knights stand the people those oaths were sworn to protect.
